Where in the world is Mark Hunter

November 2007

Think back to 1982. Do you imagine disco music, the Village People, big hair, the original Charlie’s Angels, lava lamps, and Studio 54? I think back and remember the opening night of Hunter’s Chicago on October 20, 1982. I had picked up my Volkswagen Rabbit convertible from the body shop that day. It had just been fixed from a fender bender. On the way to work from the body shop, the transmission fell out, just blocks from the bar and I had to walk the rest of the way. Good thing the opening night at the bar went better than the car ride to the bar.

Fast forward to October 20, 2007, my partner Patrick and I arrived at Hunter’s Chicago with the searchlights blazing as if we were arriving at the Oscars. It was THE party of Chicago that night. It was Hunter’s Chicago, twenty fifth anniversary party. With well over eight hundred in attendance, it was a party befitting the milestone. The red carpet, food, champagne fountain, ice sculpture, entertainment and open bars were amazing.

Congratulations and thank you to everyone that did such a wonderful job to create such a wonderful event. A very special thank you to Peter Landorf, general manager, who selflessly and loyally has worked for Hunter’s Chicago for twenty four of the twenty five years the bar has been open. Matter of fact, Peter was a customer on the night of our first anniversary party when I shoved a cocktail tray into his hand and said, “Can you waiter”? He said, “Sure”, or “I think so” and the rest is history. Thanks, Peter.

I am personally very proud of our twenty five year accomplishment, and speaking of being proud, two weeks after the Hunter’s Chicago’s twenty fifth anniversary party, Pride was celebrated in Palm Springs. Patrick and I had a wonderful time. The weather was perfect and while we were at the Pride Festival, a rainbow not created by rain, suddenly appeared in the sky. Not your regular rainbow, it was like a smile in the sky, a rainbow smile. Maybe the universe was giving us all a message. Be proud, be happy. Our manager in Palm Springs, Jennifer, did a great job in bringing order to a very busy, chaotic weekend.

During Pride Weekend in Palm Springs we held our first National Drink contest. Semi final winners form each of the Hunter’s locations met in Palm Springs for the finals. From Chicago we had Scott Steif with his Rosey Pom cocktail, from Palm Springs we had John Bianco with his Mocha Hazelnut Martini, and from San Jose, we had Joe Colligan with his Goose Hunter shot. The scores were very close, but John Bianco came out on top with his winning recipe. Look for our new national drink menu in your favorite Hunter’s soon.

Last but not least Patrick and I would like to thank our friend Dennis Schroeder for his generous hospitality in letting us stay with him while in Palm Springs. Did you know that Dennis has close relations with the much celebrated personality, Sondra Von Smirnoff? Look at the pictures and see if you can see the family resemblance. Thank you Dennis. In closing I want to say how proud I am of all three of our nightclubs. Each club has brought wonderful sense of PRIDE. .......Mark Hunter
