Pride, what does it mean to you?

I have found that Pride means so many different things to so many of my gay friends. To some it means that there is at least one day of the year that they can feel totally comfortable in their homosexual skins with no worries what others may think of them.

To some others it is a celebration of their homosexual lifestyle. To yet others it is a day in which their souls can feel connected with others like themselves.

On the other hand there are some that feel Pride is crap, an over done festival that celebrates exclusivity when all we want is to be accepted into this diverse world. In other words, can you be special and part of the “normal” world at the same time?

One person mentioned that there was a time and place for the Gay Pride in the past, but Gay Pride celebrations and parades are no longer relevant today. “Gay pride parades were fun in the 70’s”, another said, today the parades are only for anyone with a cause or a business to hawk.

To me, pride is all about diversity.

Diversity makes us all special. Take pride in the fact we are unique. Not a unique group, but a unique person, a person as unique as one of the infinite colors of the rainbow flag. The only group I put myself into is the group known as the human being. I like to celebrate diversity everyday. Just like that TV commercial that shows people being nice to each other going full circle, I like to be connected to everyone, everyday.

Do I sound like a flower child of the 70’s? Maybe I do. The picture you see here is of me being proud to be with my partner Patrick and our child Paco. Celebrate diversity.
Until next time, Ciao. .......Mark Hunter
